Article excerpt--published in No Ho News Weekly: Review of Elion Ai

Amidst flickering, glimmering, swirling strobe lights and surrounded by TV screens--all sporting a scene from "Zatoichi" (a rather spry, blind, Japanese samurai bathes in a pool with a naked woman, all the while reassuring her, "Don't worry, I'm blind, I'm blind," the dubious smirk on his face notwithstanding, Elion Ai performed at the Knitting Factory in Los Angeles...

Elion Ai (pronounced "a lion eye," has been in Los Angeles for less than a year yet he has already opened for such national acts as E-40 and Chingy.   He was listed by Broadjam.com as one of America's top ten rappers, and his music is being aired in places as far away as Zagreb, Croatia.  But his performance at the Knitting Factory was his most powerful ever.

Xavier hopped back on stage with the grace and energy of a dancer. (Hmm... Whatever is his day job?) Music just seemed to move him around the stage like oil popping in a frying pan, and I couldn't help but wonder what energy drink he imbibes before each performance.
He sang soulfully, with a strong, pulsating vibrato and a resounding power and energy not equaled by many. My guess is that Xavier's microphone was probably more of a prop than a necessity. Incredible! See these guys! I mean, pay to see these guys.
Incredible! See these guys! I mean, pay to see these guys. Trust me, they are well worth it. Blood Sugar is mega-talented, on their way to fame and fortune--and they have a social conscience too!

As if I hadn't had enough, the next band, Blood Sugar, totally blew me away! It's been a long time since I'd seen a band of this caliber--and for free! My guess is that they won't be playing for free very much longer. Led by a skinny, spikey-haired guy, Xavier, Blood Sugar played a melodic, hard rock, punk mesh of Rage Against the Machine, UB40, and Jimi Hendrix they refer to as "Afro Punk."
